Ikebukuro is a bustling district on par with Shinjuku and Shibuya. In recent years, with the increase in shops selling anime goods and doujinshi around Sunshine 60, it has become known as a center for otaku culture, second only to Akihabara.

Originally known as an educational district due to the presence of a former normal school and Rikkyo University, the area now features a unique layout with the Seibu Department Store on the east side and the Tobu Department Store on the west side, alongside a massive entertainment district. However, once you move away from the station, the atmosphere of the former educational district remains strong, with small shops and residential areas spreading out. It is also widely known, even among non-literary fans, that Edogawa Ranpo lived in a house adjacent to Rikkyo University. With the progress of redevelopment, large supermarkets have appeared around the station, and the atmosphere is gradually changing.

Except for the area around the station, quiet residential streets spread out, and there are many large parks. In recent years, due to the convenience brought by the opening of the Oedo and Fukutoshin lines, apartment construction has been booming.
