Shimokitazawa: A youth-oriented neighborhood rapidly evolving through ongoing redevelopment.

Shimokitazawa: A youth-oriented neighborhood rapidly evolving through ongoing redevelopment.

What is Shimokitazawa like?

Shimokitazawa, affectionately known as "Shimokita," is a vibrant area popular with young people.

Before the station opened, the area was a peaceful landscape of rice paddies. Rapid development followed the arrival of the railway, and because road infrastructure couldn't keep pace, the area evolved into the unique, charming neighborhood it is today. The shopping streets extending in every direction from the station are lined with distinctive, independent shops, including vintage record and CD stores, boutiques featuring imported goods, and specialized eateries.

Here, you can truly feel the pulse of the people who work, create, and live in Shimokita.

Shimokitazawa Station

Shimokitazawa is located in Setagaya Ward, in the southern part of Tokyo. The station is served by both the Keio Inokashira Line and the Odakyu Odawara Line.

Using the Keio Line, you can reach the major terminal of Shibuya in just 5 minutes by express or about 7 minutes by local train. In the opposite direction, you can reach Kichijoji in 13 minutes by express. Additionally, the Odakyu Odawara Line takes you to Shinjuku in about 9 minutes by express. The Odakyu Line also offers through-service to the Chiyoda Subway Line, making it easy to reach areas like Omotesando, Akasaka, and Yushima. Both the Inokashira and Odakyu lines stop at Shimokitazawa, including express services. The Odakyu Line is also famous for its "Romancecar" limited express, providing direct access to the Hakone area, making it highly convenient for both commuting and leisure. As is typical for private railway lines in Tokyo, stations are often only a few hundred meters apart, making it a convenient area for accessing multiple lines.

Please note that the roads around the station are narrow, and there is only one bus stop located a short distance away.

Find unique, retro-style share houses in this popular neighborhood!

Most share houses in the Shimokitazawa area are small-scale, renovated apartments or former private homes.

While there are some larger share houses, many of these include dormitory-style rooms, which are recommended for those who enjoy a lively daily environment. Since Shimokitazawa was originally a residential district, it is filled with older houses and apartments. Many of the small cafes and boutiques found in the neighborhood are converted from these old homes, blending into the townscape while retaining a charming, retro atmosphere. Because of the many theaters and live music venues, the area is home to many aspiring actors, musicians, and theater troupe members, which may be why it is known as a "youth town."

The number of share houses in the Shimokitazawa area is limited, so if you are thinking of living here, be sure to check for new listings frequently!

A highly convenient town filled with fun, independent shops!

Shimokitazawa is located on the edge of the Musashino Terrace in Tokyo, centered around the intersection of the Keio Inokashira and Odakyu Odawara lines.

After the station opened, the surrounding rice paddies were rapidly developed into residential land. Because road infrastructure could not keep up with this growth, the current layout of narrow streets lined with shops and houses was formed. Shimokitazawa became known as a "youth town" in the 1970s, when many bars playing rock and jazz began to open. With venues like the Honda Theater and several smaller theaters, the area has a unique culture, attracting actors, musicians, and those aspiring to join the arts.

Theater

The shopping streets are filled with independent shops where you can enjoy a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, making it easy to dine out alone. While the convenience of being within 10 minutes of Shinjuku and Shibuya is a major plus, please be aware that the roads are narrow and parking for cars or bicycles is almost non-existent.

If you plan to commute to work or school by bicycle or motorcycle, we recommend looking for a share house that provides dedicated parking facilities.

Known as "Shimokita" and popular with young people, Shimokitazawa is actually a neighborhood name for the area around the station rather than an official administrative district.

Shimokitazawa Station is situated across a small hill on the edge of the Musashino Terrace. You can see this geography in the station layout: the Keio Inokashira Line is at ground level with a railroad crossing to the west, while the South Exit is elevated, reflecting where the Odakyu Odawara Line once crossed the tracks below.

Until the Odakyu Line station opened in 1927, the heart of the area was near the Daizawa intersection, home to Kitazawa Hachiman Shrine and Sogen-ji Temple, surrounded by peaceful rice paddies. Following the opening of the Odakyu Line in 1927 and the Teito Electric Railway (now the Inokashira Line) in 1933, the area underwent rapid residential development. The resulting maze of narrow streets and historic charm has allowed it to flourish as a vibrant area filled with unique, independent shops.

Just as you might find a small, stylish cafe tucked away in a residential street, share houses in Shimokitazawa often sit quietly within these neighborhoods. Why not experience this town for yourself—a place currently undergoing major redevelopment following the undergrounding of the Odakyu Line—from the comfort of a local share house?
