Hoping for romance because we share the same space.

The survey results show that a majority of men are indeed open to the possibility of meeting someone in a share house.

  • If you're living together with women, you can't help but have some expectations. (30s/Male/Company Employee)
  • Since you spend so much time together, it feels like you'd get close quickly. If you hit it off, there’s a high chance for something more. (20s/Male/Company Employee)
  • If I could meet a wonderful woman and live together, I think it would make for an even better share house experience than I imagined. (30s/Male/Company Employee)
Male heart

It seems many men expect that living under the same roof will naturally lead to romantic encounters. Because this environment offers a level of closeness not found in everyday life, residents can connect with many people on a deeper level, which in turn creates more opportunities for romance.

Romance is part of the share house experience.

Here are some thoughts from men who specifically chose a share house for the potential to meet someone:

  • I see that as one of the main purposes of a share house. It’s a relief knowing that others might be looking for the same thing. (20s/Male/Student)
  • As long as we are living together under one roof, I think it’s only natural that some kind of meaningful relationship might develop. (30s/Male/Company Employee)

For some, the desire for new connections is exactly why they chose to live in a share house. With so many opportunities for daily communication, it’s common for friendships to blossom into romances, which can make the share house experience even more enjoyable.

I don't need romance; I wouldn't date a housemate.

Surprisingly, some men are not interested in finding romance in a share house at all.

  • Looking for romance there is just something you see on TV. In reality, it never works out. (20s/Male/Student)
  • I don't see how you could have a deep relationship in a place where everything is so exposed. (30s/Male/Company Employee)
Men who don't need romance

Some feel that because many people move in looking for romance, those relationships are often short-lived. Others feel that the lack of privacy in a shared living space makes it difficult to maintain a serious, long-term relationship.

I'm here to save money, not to find a partner.

Here are some perspectives from those who prioritize savings over romance:

  • I view this strictly as a place for saving money and social interaction, so I have no romantic expectations. (30s/Male/Company Employee)
  • I chose this place for the practical purpose of living, so I think it’s wrong to bring romantic feelings into it. (30s/Male/Company Employee)
Not looking for romance

For those focused on reducing living expenses or saving for future goals, romance is simply not a priority. In these cases, it is natural to treat the share house as a temporary living arrangement rather than a place to seek a partner.

Is a share house the right place for those looking for love?

The survey reveals that over 60% of men are open to finding romance in a share house, though there are certainly those who are not.

It’s clear that one's outlook depends on what kind of relationship they are looking for. For those who are proactive about dating, a share house can be an ideal environment that may lead to a great connection.
