Share House Amenities #07: Japanese-Style Rooms (Washitsu)
Many share houses offer a variety of facilities in their common areas.
In this installment, we would like to introduce the "Japanese-style room" (Washitsu).
What is a Japanese-style room?
In a share house, a Japanese-style room can refer to a common space where residents gather to relax, or a private room featuring traditional tatami flooring.
Some share houses are built around a specific concept, such as renovated traditional townhouses (machiya) or Showa-era modern designs, where Japanese-style rooms are a central feature.
The benefits of a Japanese-style room include its calming, unique atmosphere. For rooms using futons instead of beds, you can fold the bedding away during the day to maximize your living space.
Additionally, many renovated "Japanese-modern" properties feature ample storage, such as traditional closets (oshiire) and built-in compartments, making them highly practical for those with a lot of belongings or those who prefer to keep their space tidy.
While all-flooring rooms have become the standard, living in a share house is a great opportunity to experience the unique comfort of a Japanese-style room for yourself.
