[Must-read for those considering it] What kind of trouble can happen in a share house?

What kind of troubles and issues can arise in a share house?

With share houses gaining popularity through TV shows and magazines, many people are interested in this style of living. The prospect of splitting rent to secure a better living environment at a lower cost, or the potential to make new friends, is certainly appealing. However, living with strangers can also come with hidden downsides. We conducted a survey to find out what kind of troubles and issues people anticipate in a share house.

  • ■ Region: Nationwide
  • ■ Target: All ages, male and female
  • ■ Valid responses: 100 samples

Are share house troubles caused by a buildup of minor issues?

Yellow card

The survey results indicate that many troubles stem from residents failing to follow agreements regarding lifestyle etiquette and the division of household chores.

  • I think troubles easily arise due to differences in values and habits between residents. (30s/Female/Office worker)
  • Based on my experience living in a share house, it’s easy to argue over chores like cleaning. It’s also a source of conflict when buying shared items. (30s/Female/Civil servant)
  • When there are shared responsibilities for cleaning or meals, some people don't do their part. Some don't pay their share. There are issues if room sizes aren't equal. If your personalities clash, it leads to friction. Not being able to bring friends over. If there are both men and women, there can be relationship issues. (20s/Female/Unemployed)
  • If people leave common areas dirty, frustration builds up little by little. (20s/Female/Contract employee)
  • Troubles regarding noise and hygiene. Everyone has different values, but if someone lacks social awareness and causes trouble beyond the bounds of common sense, it leads to conflict. (30s/Female/Freelancer)
  • If there are people who won't make an effort to avoid trouble, you can't even have a discussion, and it feels like things will never improve. (30s/Female/Office worker)

Everyone is raised differently, and it is difficult to change the habits ingrained from living at home. Regarding the use of common areas, someone who is tidy may find it unbearable to watch a less meticulous person leave a mess. Similarly, someone who prefers a quiet life may find a neighbor playing loud music just on the other side of the wall to be a nuisance. As time goes on, if mutual consideration fades, pent-up frustration can easily explode. Since you are living under the same roof, maintaining established rules is the key to ensuring everyone lives comfortably.

Consider the realities of living with others before you decide

Imagining share house life

This survey highlights the difficulties of living under one roof with others due to differences in lifestyle habits.

Unlike living in a standard apartment, share house living requires a higher level of cooperation, such as cleaning shared spaces like bathrooms and hallways. If you move into a share house without prior experience living alone, you might find yourself exhausted by the constraints of specific house rules.

Before applying for a share house, take a moment to consider the realities of living with others: will you be overly sensitive to the actions of others, or will your own schedule—perhaps due to work—inconvenience your housemates? It is best to reflect on these factors before making your decision.
