Question for women: Is a co-ed share house a good place for marriage hunting?

Co-ed Share Houses: Have you ever considered one for meeting new people or finding a partner?

Share houses have become widely known thanks to their popularity in TV dramas, and the number of people choosing this lifestyle has surged in recent years. Beyond the co-ed arrangements seen on screen, there are also women-only options. With reasonable rent and convenient locations, they have become a popular choice for many renters.

However, for those who are single, many may be hoping for the kind of romance depicted in dramas. For women looking to get married, a co-ed share house might be an intriguing prospect. We surveyed women to see if they have ever considered living in a co-ed share house as a way to meet men or find a partner.

Are women realists? The difference between drama and reality

The survey results showed that 52% of women answered "NO," slightly outnumbering those who said "YES."

  • Honestly, just because you live in the same place doesn't mean a romance will easily develop. (20s/Female/Company Employee)
  • I might meet people, but I don't want to deal with relationship stress after coming home. I also don't get the impression that you can have a serious relationship there. (30s/Female/Contract Employee)
  • If a relationship develops and things don't work out, it would be incredibly awkward. (30s/Female/Part-time Worker)
  • If you don't go through the proper stages before moving in together, you might end up disillusioned with the person before even starting a relationship. Even if you find someone you can tolerate, the bar is set too high, so I think it's difficult. (20s/Female/Student)

Many women feel that romance doesn't easily blossom in a share house, viewing it strictly as a place to live. Others expressed that after a long day, they don't have the energy to put into finding a partner at home. It seems many women take a realistic approach, keeping their own lives separate from the world of TV dramas.

Some have a clear path in mind from dating to marriage and aren't interested in living with someone they don't already have feelings for.

The power of TV? Some women are hopeful for romance!

On the other hand, 48% of women answered "YES," nearly half of the respondents.

  • It would be ideal to naturally see sides of someone you wouldn't normally see on a standard date. It would be wonderful to meet someone you could experience a "trial marriage" with. (20s/Female/Company Employee)
  • I don't expect to meet many new people in my daily life, and living together allows you to see someone's true, unadorned self. (30s/Female/Company Employee)
  • I think it's a valid place to meet people. A benefit is being able to naturally observe someone's daily habits before committing to living together. (30s/Female/Homemaker)
  • I answered "YES" because of the image from dramas. Either way, I hope to have a good encounter. (20s/Female/Part-time Worker)

Many women view share houses positively as a place to meet people, holding onto the hope of finding "the one." The opportunity to see someone's everyday behavior is unique to the share house experience. It is also clear that the influence of dramas plays a role, with many looking forward to the kind of male-female interaction that doesn't usually happen in everyday life.

Realists or Romantics? Women's thoughts on share houses

The survey results were nearly split down the middle, though "NO" held a slight majority. Opinions were divided between those who view a share house strictly as a living space and those who see it as a place filled with potential for new encounters.

For those who aren't looking for romance, the traditional path of meeting someone elsewhere and dating before marriage feels more natural. Meanwhile, many others see the share house as a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The share house rental model is still relatively new, and it will be interesting to see how these living arrangements continue to foster new connections in the future.
